Martyrs' day: Nation pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 72nd death anniversary
On 30th January, India observes Martyrs' Day every year, to pay homage to honor the sacrifices made by Mahatma Gandhi and countless other brave Indians. This year India is observing the 72nd death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse in Birla House.
Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 02, 1869, in Gujarat. After completing his early education, Gandhi went to London for further studies. He later went to south Africa on an assignment. After facing discrimination in South Africa, he returned to India in 1916 and lived his entire life for the freedom struggle.
Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, India gained Independence on August 15, 1947. During his fight against the British, Gandhi's first achievement was Champaran Movement in 1918. In 1920, he organized the Noncooperation movement. He was also responsible for the civil disobedience movement in 1930. In 1942, Gandhi called the Quit India Movement which is known as one of the biggest and successful campaigns of his lifetime.
